What surprised you most about your characters journey this season?
I liked the depth that was written for Wade this season. He’s very complicated and it’s a joy to play. I was most surprised by the acceptance he had of himself and the situation. It was hard to see Wade ever admit his feelings, but it was a welcome surprise.
How did your understanding of your character evolve throughout the season?
I saw that it wasn’t just social pressure that was keeping Wade from being himself. He also has a lot of self imposed pressure he puts on himself. Despite the way he behaves, he wants to be part of a social group, he wants to have friends, he wants to share his feelings, but he’s afraid of what he himself might find out and not entirely what others will see. That climactic kiss with Leo was his way of overcoming all the other fears by starting with the biggest one.
What was the most challenging aspect of bringing Wade to life this season?
It was really hard to not make it so obvious how much fun I was having with this character! I find Wade hilarious, I really do. His snide sarcasm and teen angst really gets me in the funny bone and it was quite hard to maintain the broodiness necessary without breaking character and laughing.
What are you most excited for viewers to experience with this season?
I’m excited for viewers to experience the first male on male romantic plot of the series! It’s no secret Flunk is – and most likely will continue to be – a female driven show and narrative, but it’s a cool thing to be the a part of the first introduction to something like this in the series. Hopefully some fans who identify similarly with Wade and Leo are as happy about it being in the show as I was to portray something like this.
What was the most memorable moment from filming this season?
When shooting that kiss scene with Leo, I’ll never forget the direction Ric gave for my character specifically. It was a really stark and honest idea of how Wade was feeling in that moment and it’s the dream of an actor to hear a piece of direction and simply know exactly what the director needs and wants. That working relationship is part of the magic of being on set and acting as part of a creative team. When it all just works and you feel the understanding it’s bliss.
What was your favorite location you filmed at and why?
The theatre was really fun. When you’re part of a cast and team that get on as well as we did, moving from primary set locations to new ones always feels like a fun little field trip. It’s also nice because you know you’re the only cast members that have been there doing those scenes together at that location. It creates a sense of comradery and you realize that of all the scenes and seasons filmed on this long running show this place, this team and these characters are unique to us, they’re ours in this space.
What’s something you learned about yourself as an actor this season?
I learned to just surrender to the character more. It’s the age old struggle with acting, leaving your own mannerisms, behaviours, beliefs, comforts etc. at the door and just remembering that this is a character, this isn’t you, people, the viewers, simply care about this character in this moment in time. So, leave it all at the door and just do the work, let the character do what they need to do!
Can you share a behind the scenes story that really sticks with you?
It’s always the time spend with the other actors and team. I’m a sucker for cultivating on set relationships and just enjoying the company and fun. I can’t fathom people who can’t enjoy themselves on set. Driving on lunch to the local bakery when filming at the theatre, sitting down, chatting about the scenes and characters, how we’re all feeling, what we think of the next scenes and what we want to try. That itself is part of the art for me. Listening to music on the drive back, talking about how different songs would make cool intro’s to a film. Keep those interactions coming.
What do you hope viewers take away from your character this season?
We’re all destined to do the thing we fear the most. I promise you, the sooner you face it the better off you’ll be. That’s in life and in love.
